How We Rate RVs

Average Hitch Weights

The average hitch weight is the amount of weight (pounds) at the front of the trailer that exerts itself upon the towing vehicle. This weight is extremely important for both trailer coaches and fifth wheels because it will tell you what capacity you will need for the suspension and hitch of the towing vehicle. The hitch weight (with freshwater and fuel tanks full) could vary greatly from our figures if the manufacturer is careless in the placement of the tanks. All holding tanks should be in the proximity of the axles. We do not recommend buying any trailer with holding tanks located at the extreme front or rear of the trailer.
