Thinking of storing your RV in Virginia? Think again.
As if RVers didn't have enough expenses...
If you travel to/from Virginia every year and leave your RV stored there while you go home or elsewhere for the winter, you will now be taxed for storing your RV even if you are not a legal resident of Virginia.
The legislative body of Virginia passed House Bill 2289 giving the state the right to collect property taxes from recreational vehicles (motorhomes, trailers, fifth wheels, tent trailers, boats) stored anywhere in the state. Furthermore, the owners of storage units or garages will have to submit your name and address to the state as proof of rent/lease. Following is the "legalese" language of the bill:
"Real and personal property taxes; duty to provide information to commissioner of the revenue. Requires (i) certain entities that manage real property and that maintain names of the owners of such property, on the request of the commissioner of revenue, to provide such names to the commissioner, and (ii) the owner or manager of a self-storage facility to provide the names and addresses of the lessees of any portion of the facility's outdoor common area."
Translation: Pay more taxes.
For this morsel of "good" news to RVers who keep Virginia's tourism economy alive, you can thank Delegate Benjamin L. Cline (R) - House District 24 (DelBCline@house.virginia.gov) who, apparently, wants more of your retirement money.
Don't let this happen in your state, so watch it.
